Summer Reading

Hello awesome Upper School Parents,

I hope this message finds you well and that you are enjoying the start of the summer season! As we move into summer break, I want to emphasize the importance of continuing academic engagement during these summer months to prevent what is known as “summer learning loss.”

Here are some key statistics on summer learning loss:

Learning Loss During Summer: On average, students lose about one month of learning over the summer. This loss is more pronounced in math than in reading. For example, children from low-income families can fall behind by as much as three months in reading by the end of fifth grade due to cumulative summer learning loss.

Impact by Subject: Studies indicate that students typically lose 17% – 34% of the prior year’s learning gains in reading and math over the summer break.

Disparities in Learning Loss: Summer learning loss disproportionately affects students from lower-income families more than their higher-income peers. This is partly due to differences in access to educational resources during the summer.

Here are a few tips to help keep your child academically active:

Complete 24 Achieve 3000 Articles (students should aim for at least 75% on each activity). This allows your child to read regularly. Participating in summer reading programs can help maintain and even improve reading skills. Students should complete at least three (3) articles per week. You can encourage your child to complete more, if needed. Students should have their log-in information. This is a Graded Assignment. For Achieve3000, students will need to visit Acheive3000.com and log in with their credentials. Students are at liberty to choose the articles they wish to read. They need to read a minimum of 24 articles and score at least 75% on their first try.

Complete the Attached IXL Math skills. Students should complete the summer boost math assignment from the math course they just completed. They are more than welcome to complete other math course boost assignments if they have successfully completed their course assignments. This helps to engage your child and keep their skills sharp. This is a Graded Assignment. For IXL Assignments, students will need to visit IXL.com and log in with their credentials. They can then type in the corresponding three codes in teh search bar for the skill they will complete. Students are encouraged to review the videos and take notes for each skill in which they need additional help. Students should attempt to complete at least 20 math skills.

Additional Suggestions – Educational Activities: Incorporate educational games, science experiments, and field trips to museums or historical sites to make learning fun and interactive.

Please feel free to reach out if you need any assistance about how to keep your child engaged over summer. Thank you for your support and partnership in your child’s education. Together, we can ensure that our students continue to thrive academically, even during summer months.

What makes our youth gifted and talented may not always be good grades in school, but a different way of looking at the world and learning.
